The Journey to Inclusion: The Next 60 Years The Community Living movement nationwide has reached the sixty year mark. Throughout that sixty year history much has been accomplished on the journey toward full inclusion and citizenship for persons with an intellectual disability and their families however, much more remains to be done. People with an intellectual disability still face isolation, marginalization and exclusion in many areas of their lives and all the progress that has been made over the last sixty years remains tenuous, always under threat. Families still struggle greatly to get the supports they need to live an ordinary life on par with other families. What will it take to create the truly inclusive society we dream about? What is the next frontier in the quest for inclusion for people with an intellectual disability, their families, friends, allies and society at large? Krista Carr, Executive Vice President of the Canadian Association for Community Living, will share her perspectives, hopes, dreams and calls to action for building the fair, just and inclusive society we are striving for.
